The apple of somebody’s eye is defined as: anyone or anything that someone loves the most and is extremely proud of, protecting at all costs. During the reign of the first king of England,

the pupil at the Centre of the eye was called the apple as it was incorrectly thought to be an apple-shaped solid. Seeing as this delicate pupil of the eye is critical for vision, it is important that it is cherished no matter what the cost.         Alfred the Great, the pupil at the Centre of the eye was called the apple as it was incorrectly thought to be an apple-shaped solid. Seeing as this delicate pupil of the eye is critical for vision, it is important that it is cherished no matter what the cost. Therefore, over time, the apple of my eye has been used to mean a much loved person or thing. Getting back to Alfred the Great, the monarch used this expression in his Old English translation of Pope Gregory I’s Latin work Cura Pastoralis and this is deemed to be the first use of the idiom the apple of my eye. Additionally, when the Bible was translated into English, William Tyndale used this idiom in a number of instances. To refer to God’s law in Proverbs chapter7 verse 2. Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. To speak about the Lord’s love for Israel in Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 10. He found him in a desert and in a wasteland, in a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him, and He kept him as the apple of His eye. And King David praying for God’s safekeeping in Psalm chapter 17 verse 8.Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings. Go on, type in the comments who or what is the apple of your eye: the person or thing that you love the most. Now to check out more idiom origins watch one of these videos. Thanks so much for watching and I’ll see you in the next one.

Learn the English Phrases : don't quit your day job

In this English lesson , I wanted to help you learn the English phrase don't quit your day job or don't give up your day job. This is a phrase that we say jokingly after someone does something like plays the guitar or sings a song, or does something that requires some talent, and we don't think they were very good at it.

So it's not a nice thing to say. It's kind of a mean joke, but let's say your brother has been practicing the guitar for weeks, and he has been practicing singing for weeks, and he sits down one evening, and he plays you a song, and it's not that good.

I wanted to help you learn the English phrase don't quit your day job or don't give up your day job. This is a phrase that we say jokingly after someone does something like plays the guitar or sings a song, or does something that requires some talent, and we don't think they were very good at it.

You might say, well, don't quit your day job. What you're saying is now is not the time to quit your job because I don't think you have enough talent to make a living or to make money singing and playing the guitar.

So not a nice joke, but if someone does something like plays the guitar or does not sing well, you might say hey, don't quit your day job. The other phrase I wanna look at is the phrase when you say someone is a natural.

So let's say your brother bought a guitar, and he only practiced for a week, and all of the sudden, he was just an amazing guitarist. You would say he's a natural. Let's say your sister, when she goes to learn to drive a vehicle, within an hour, she's a perfect driver. You would say she's a natural. When you say someone is a natural, it means that with very little training and with very little practice, they become really, good at something.

So some people are just natural, or you can say they are a natural at certain sports. I think there's a baseball movie called "The Natural."    You'll have to look that up. Anyways, don't quit your day job, something funny-ish, so that means it's a little bit funny, that you say to someone if you don't think they're very good at the talent they are displaying, and then when you say that someone is a natural, it means they're really good at what they do with very little training and very little practice. Let's look at a comment from one of the last videos.

This comment is from Julia Olis. Julia is a member of this channel. Remember, if you would like to support this channel, there is a join button down there, and I do tend to answer the comments or respond to the comments from members before I respond to comments from subscribers. So Julia Olis says hello, dear teacher. I hope everything is going well. It is .Smoking, although legal, is very frowned upon in this day and age. Great use of two different phrases, Julia. If someone dares to smoke in a public place, for instance, at the bus stop, he definitely will get not only a dirty look but also a fine from the police. Excellent, so you've used, I think three phrases, if not four phrases in there that I've just recently taught. Nice work. My response was that is very true here in Canada, as well. Smoking in public is frowned upon. So thank you, Julia, for that comment. And it was fun to be able to respond to you via video. Anyways, it is a beautiful day here in Ontario, Canada. I'll talk a little bit about the weather. We have been getting awesome rainfall lately on the farm, and that just makes me excited. I think I've mentioned in other videos that one of my primary jobs on the farm is to water things. So I drag hoses around, and I set up sprinklers, and I water a lot of things on the farm. When it rains, like it just rained yesterday again, I have less to do, and I kinda like that because I do teach full time still, and I do all these YouTube videos. So whenever it rains, it's like a mini holiday for me. It's a stay vacation or, sorry, it's a staycation.I don't go anywhere, but I'm super excited whenever it rains.
